FILM: The UP Series (UK - 1963 to 2019) @ The Roxy

ADMISSION: By Donation to SAGA | Everyone Welcome!

In 1964, British director Michael Apted interviewed 7-year old children of all classes, from around England. The result was the groundbreaking film “7-Up”, a snapshot of Britain seen through the eyes of its children. He then revisited them every 7 years, making each a feature-length film. As we watch them grow, we begin to relate to the group of 14 as part of our family,  sharing their triumphs and heartaches.

After a 7-year wait, the next film’s release becomes a milestone by which we compare our own lives to theirs. Each film starts with a refresher, showing brief clips of each person’s past appearances, before revealing where they are today. It’s like a family reunion every 7 years.

63-Up, likely the last of the series, has just been released to the usual rapturous praise.

See the entire series – 8 full-length films!

  • March 19th – “7 Up” and “7 + 7”;

COMMUNITY EVENT: Vibrational Belonging @ The Netloft

COMMUNITY EVENT: Vibrational Belonging @ The Netloft

By Donation | Everyone Welcome!

The Gabriola Ecumenical Society presents Vibrational Belonging, healing ourselves, our community, our earth through shared vibrational resonance.

Held the 3rd Sunday of each month from September through June.

Facilitated by Leah Hokanson.

Vibrational Belonging is an open invitation to explore the ancient communal tradition of sound making as a way to celebrate, honour, and invoke what sustains life: as individuals, as a community, and as citizens of our beloved earth. No musical training or singing experience required. If you can hum, sigh, chitter like an eagle, or croak like a raven, you’re qualified. And if silence is more your thing, your focused intention  will help to amplify the vibrational resonance  with one another  and with our sacred environment.

MUSIC: Brandon Isaac @ Birdsong – Gabriola
May 7 @ 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm
MUSIC: Brandon Isaac @ Birdsong – Gabriola

ADMISSION BY DONATION ($15 – $20 suggested) |

Brandon Issak has played Gabriola Island before, but this is his first time at Birdsong! Fresh off the release of his new album and a nomination for Blues Artist of the Year at the 2019 Western Canadian Music Awards, we look forward to bringing Brandon to our living room concert series this spring.

“Brandon not only plays his guitar but he plays his audience like a ringmaster in his own circus, always looking for new ways to entertain.”-Teresa Mallam, Prince George Free Press.

What separates this Juno award nominated artist from the rest of the pack besides his world-class musicianship and song writing, is his ability to connect and involve the audience in his live shows.

Brandon’s affinity for the rawness and spontaneity of the blues is second to none, as anyone who has had the privilege of being a part of his audience will tell you. He brings a firebrand style of guitar as well as incredibly stirring vocals that truly has to be witnessed to be appreciated! He is VERY much in the moment as he rips it up, and we know you’ll be impressed with the caliber of showmanship within his performance of songs & stories by this great Canadian artist.
